Dr. Joseph Kvedar, director of the Center for Connected Health and iCons in Medicine Volunteer and Advisory Board Member, recently discussed the use of avatars or “virtual nurses” to deliver care. According to Dr. Kvedar, many patients are initially concerned upon hearing that they will be receiving care from a computer, but the use of a “virtual person” rather than a standard computer interaction seems to ease some discomfort. On March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded. The 8.9 magnitude quake gave way to a tsunami that engulfed the nation's east coast, and threat of a nuclear crisis followed these natural disasters.

While relief efforts on the ground are underway, it is imperative to prepare for the need of medical assistance that will most likely follow. iCons in Medicine Members who are specialty physicians but are not yet a part of an iConsult Chapter, may click here to participate the "Japan" Chapter and offer teleconsultation support to medical-relief workers in country.
