Dr. Joseph Kvedar, director of the Center for Connected Health and iCons in Medicine Volunteer and Advisory Board Member, recently discussed the use of avatars or “virtual nurses” to deliver care. According to Dr. Kvedar, many patients are initially concerned upon hearing that they will be receiving care from a computer, but the use of a “virtual person” rather than a standard computer interaction seems to ease some discomfort.

Mr. Evans Nii Boye, Executive Director of Rural Women Development and Health Initiative and Leader of the iCons in Medicine Oguaa Orphan Aid International Member Organization, discussed the importance of a recent workshop in Ghana. Aimed at improving the socio-economic well being of women and their dependents, the workshop provided management training and development skills for 50 female entrepreneurs in rural areas.

Dr. Adnan Hammad, director of ACCESS' Community Health and Research Center and iCons in Medicine Member, recently discussed the overall health of individuals immigrating to the Detroit area. According to a 2009 ACCESS survey, the prevalence of heart disease among these populations is due in part to a high cholesterol rate that is roughly double the national average.

Dr. Mouhanad Hammami; Chief of Health Operations at Wayne County Health and Human Services, Executive Director of NAAMA, and iCons in Medicine Volunteer; recently spoke about the societal factors impacting the infant mortality rate in Michigan. According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, for every 1,000 births in the state, eight infants die before their first birthday.

Dr. Joseph Kvedar, director of the Center for Connected Health and iCons in Medicine Volunteer and Advisory Board Member, discussed the Center’s research grant. The Center for Connected Health will utilize this funding from the McKesson Foundation’s Mobilizing for Health initiative to integrate a text-messaging program into an existing program at Massachusetts General Hospital to help patients with diabetes manage their condition.

Drs. Ronald Merrell, Rifat Latifi, and Ronald Weinstein; and Charles Doarn, MBA; all iCons in Medicine Advisory Board Members who are involved in the International Virtual e-Hospital (IVeH) program; recently participated in grand opening of a USAID-funded telemedicine center on the campus of the University Hospital Center “Mother Theresa” (TUHC) in Tirana. Previously the IVeH developed and built the National Telemedicine Center of Albania, and worked to link sites in the United States with all telemedicine centers in Albania.

Pedometers, glucose monitors, and other devices can collect patient information from wireless health-tracking sensors for upload to a web interface where it can be analyzed.

Dr. Rifat Latifi, Professor of Surgery, founder of the International Virtual e-Hospital Foundation, and iCons in Medicine Advisory Board Member and Volunteer, recently discussed the IVeH’s use of Polycom video conferencing. According to Dr. Latifi, the video conferencing solution allows IVeH to quickly share knowledge, train medical providers, and conduct consultations with worldwide experts to improve patient care.

Dr. Nassir Ghaemi, who is a Tufts University School of Medicine psychiatry professor and a clinical researcher in mood disorders,  has been an iCons in Medicine Volunteer Member in the NAAMA Chapter since August 2008. His recently published book, A First Rate Madness: Uncovering the Links Between Leadership and Mental Illness, explores the lives of political leaders and posits that though they displayed signs of mental illness, those conditions may have helped, rather than harmed, their abilities to perform their duties during times of crisis.

Dr. Dale Alverson, president of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) and iCons in Medicine Advisory Board and Volunteer Member, recently moderated a panel on telemedicine and mHealth. Panelists will provide insight and perspective into how Health IT can help increase access and improve patient outcomes. According to Dr. Alverson, “Telemedicine and HIT will play a critical role in health care reform.”

Dr. Ben Gerber, associate professor of medicine and iCons in Medicine Member, and a  team of researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Institute for Health Research and Policy and College of Medicine have received a grant to improve diabetes management in minority patients. The five-year study will evaluate a new intervention designed to improve lifestyle behaviors and medication compliance in individuals with uncontrolled type-2 diabetes.

Jonathan Linkous, iCons in Medicine Member and CEO of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA), recently discussed insurance coverage for home monitoring for individuals with chronic diseases. Reports indicate that increased use of telemedicine could help to reduce disparities between rural healthcare and the services available in urban and suburban areas.

According to Dr. Hammami, children are not exercising enough, and are making poor food choices that they learned by example. A reported one in three children is overweight or obese.

Dr. Adnan Hammad, director of ACCESS’ Community Health and Research Center and iCons in Medicine Member, discussed the support services that the organization is offering to the community following a recent shooting.  According to Dr. Hammad, these types of events can be traumatic for everyone in the community, and ACCESS has a crisis team in place to assist residents and will also be working with local leaders.
